Case Study: How I Made My First Sale on Gumroad Anonymously
I asked myself that same question. And the answer? Yes, absolutely. In fact, making my first anonymous sale on Gumroad was the turning point that proved this faceless business model works.
In this case study, I’ll walk you through exactly how I set up my first faceless digital product and made my first sale—without a website, social following, or even a profile picture.
My Goal: Launch Something Simple Without Showing My Face
Like many of you, I didn’t want to go the traditional influencer route. No selfies, no livestreams, no oversharing. I just wanted to build something quietly behind the scenes—something digital and scalable.
So I challenged myself: Could I make a sale with zero followers, using only a faceless brand?
Step 1: Choosing a Digital Product I Could Create Quickly
I knew I didn’t want to overthink it. My goal was speed and proof of concept—not perfection.
I created a simple product using Canva: a “Weekly Content Planning Template” designed for bloggers and small business owners.
It was a 5-page PDF. That’s it. No fluff, no fancy packaging. Just something genuinely helpful and easy to use.
Step 2: Setting Up a Faceless Gumroad Store
Gumroad makes it super easy to get started:
- I created an account using a fresh email address (not tied to my real name).
- I named my storefront something brandable: “The Quiet Creator”.
- I uploaded my product, wrote a clear description, and added 3 mockup images made in Canva.
Pro Tip: Keep your branding minimal and clean—let your product speak for itself.
Step 3: Driving Traffic Without Social Media
Here’s the fun part: I didn’t use Instagram, TikTok, or YouTube to get traffic.
Instead, I created a faceless Pinterest account. I made 3 keyword-optimized pins using Canva and linked them directly to my Gumroad product page.
Each pin had:
- A bold title (e.g. “Free Weekly Content Planner for Bloggers”)
- A strong call to action (“Click to download instantly”)
- Simple design using my brand colors and fonts
I scheduled them with Pinterest's native scheduler to keep things consistent.
Step 4: The Sale Came In!
Five days later, I received a Gumroad email: “You’ve made a sale.”
I still remember staring at the notification in disbelief. Someone had found my planner on Pinterest, clicked through, and paid $5 for it.
No face. No name. No video. Just a helpful product and a clean funnel.
What Worked (And What I’d Do Differently)
What Worked:
- Low-ticket product made the decision easy for the buyer
- Pinterest SEO brought in organic traffic for free
- Simple, no-pressure product page on Gumroad
What I’d Improve Next Time:
- Add a lead magnet to build an email list
- Set up an email follow-up for upsells or bundles
- Track my pin performance more closely
Lessons for New Faceless Creators
If you’re feeling stuck or unsure where to start, let this be your permission to start small. Your first product doesn’t need to go viral. It just needs to exist.
Here’s what I learned:
- Your idea doesn’t have to be perfect. Done is better than perfect.
- People buy small digital products that save them time or effort.
- You can absolutely sell without ever putting your face on camera.
